How to tell if your goose is a 23 inch goose
The Standard size is chosen by three measurements, and the biggest one decides. Stand the goose on its base, measure straight up to the top of the head, then wrap a soft tape around the widest part of the body and around the head and beak. It is a 23 inch goose, size Standard, when all three fit:
- Height: base to top of the head is more than 17 in and up to 23 in.
- Body: more than 19¾ in and up to 27⅜ in around the widest part.
- Head: more than 8⅝ in and up to 11⅝ in around the head and beak.

Standard takes in the geese in the middle, taller than 17 in and up to 23 in. A 19 inch goose, a size some stores sell, falls between Small and Standard, so it is Standard: measure it, check the body and head against the table, and size up rather than squeeze it into Small. A goose taller than 23 in and up to 27 in takes Large (27 in), and a goose of 17 in or less takes Small (17 in).
