Sew-by dates

The advent calendar has to hang by the first of December, and it is the biggest job here at about 5 hours, so start it in November. Gifts can wait until mid-December: the bags, hats and ornaments are all an hour or less each.

The advent calendar is a 36 inch wall hanging with pockets. The ornaments are a set of four stuffed shapes (a star, a tree, a heart and a mini stocking) in two sizes, 3 in and 4½ in. A fat quarter makes the whole set in the classic size. The fabric cone Christmas tree pattern comes in 8, 14 and 20 inch heights. For the order to make them in, read the fabric advent calendar tutorial and ornaments guide.

Santa hat and elf hat sewing pattern

The Santa and elf hats go from toddler (head 18 to 19½ in) to adult large (22½ to 24 in).

The wine and gift bags replace wrapping paper: the wine bag is 4½ by 16 inches. The zipper pouch, potholder and scrunchie are among the free patterns, and the elastic bookmark takes about ten minutes.

The reindeer plush comes in 7, 9½ and 12 inch sizes and takes about 3 hours.

Questions

What is the easiest Christmas thing to sew?

An ornament or a gift bag. The ornaments take about 30 minutes each and the bags about an hour.

Can I use fat quarters?

For the ornaments, yes: one fat quarter makes the set of four in the classic size. The advent calendar pockets can be cut from four fat quarters too.

When should I start the advent calendar?

In early or mid November. It takes about 5 hours and needs to be ready by December 1.
