Stuffed animal sewing patterns for beginners: your first plush

Never made one? Read how to sew a plushie, step by step first. Then start with the Plush Whale. It is about 2 hours and teaches the things every plush needs: curved seams, a gusset, turning through a gap and closing it by hand. The Sitting Frog and the Bat come next at about 2½ hours. The capybara, mushroom, snail and reindeer have more pieces and take about 3 hours.

Best fabric for plushies

Short-pile fabrics like minky, fleece and velboa make the softest toys. They stretch a little and the pile hides your stitches, but they shed when cut, so cut them on a mat and vacuum after. Quilting cotton is easier to sew and gives a flatter, crisper look. The whale works in minky, fleece, velour, corduroy or cotton with a pale tummy. The snail wants something with texture for the shell, like corduroy, boucle or velvet. The bat looks best in short-pile minky with a printed cotton for the wings.

Plushies for babies

For a baby, embroider the eyes instead of using buttons or safety eyes, sew with a short stitch and check every seam before you hand it over. Fill with polyester fiberfill only.

For the season

The bat is a Halloween favorite and the reindeer is a Christmas one, and it is in the Christmas collection too. Seen a plush you love in a shop? Find a pattern from a photo shows how Sewzy picks the closest of its patterns.

Memory animals

A memory bear is sewn from a shirt, a dress or baby clothes that belonged to someone. Sewzy has a bear, a bunny, a cat, a dog and an elephant, each in ten sizes from 6 to 24 inches. They have their own page: memory bear pattern.

Questions

Can I sew a plush by hand?

Yes, with a small backstitch. It takes longer, and a short machine stitch is stronger on curves, but the smaller sizes are fine by hand.

How do I close the stuffing hole?

With a ladder stitch. You sew small stitches into the fold on each side, and when you pull the thread the gap closes with no stitches showing. The plushie guide shows how.

What size should I make?

The medium size is a good first try. The small size is fiddly to turn and stuff, and the large size takes more fabric and fiberfill.
