Find your goose size first

Stand a soft tape measure next to your goose and measure from the base to the top of the head. That height picks the size. Most store-bought porch geese are about 23 inches, but 17 and 27 inch geese are common too, so measure rather than guess.

Then check two more numbers: around the widest part of the body, and around the head and beak. Each size has a largest body and head it fits. If your goose is bigger than the number in the table, take the next size up. Between sizes, go bigger.

MeasureSmallStandardLarge
Height17 in23 in27 in
Body fits19⅜ in26¼ in30¾ in
Body max19¾ in27⅜ in32½ in
Head max8⅝ in11⅝ in13½ in

Height: base to top of the head. Body: around the widest part (fits = the size it is drafted for, max = the most it takes). Head: around the head and beak.

Numbers from the size page of the witch outfit guide. Most outfits use the same body block; the accessories set only needs the head size. The goose measuring guide shows where to put the tape.

Porch goose clothes patterns for 17, 23 and 27 inch geese

Every outfit here is one pattern with three sizes: Small for a 17 inch goose, Standard for a 23 inch goose and Large for a 27 inch goose. Measure your goose, then pick the size in the table above.

23 inch porch goose outfit pattern

The Standard size fits the most common store-bought goose. If you are not sure, measure the height before you cut. See all 21 outfits with fabric amounts for a 23 inch goose.

17 inch goose clothes pattern

The Small size is for the smaller geese. It uses the least fabric, from about ½ yd for the easy dress. See all 21 outfits for a 17 inch goose.

27 inch porch goose clothes

The Large size is for the tall geese. The same outfit comes in this size, so you do not need a different pattern. See all 21 outfits for a 27 inch goose.

Porch goose dress pattern for beginners

If this is your first goose outfit, start with the easy porch goose dress pattern. It is the one beginner dress in the set, uses a single cotton for the top, sleeves and skirt, and takes about 2 hours. The Accessories Set (a hat and a scarf) is also beginner level and is a quick way to change a look between holidays.

The witch, ghost and pumpkin are the October outfits. The scarecrow and harvest dress carry on through fall, and the turkey is for Thanksgiving week. All six are on the Halloween and fall goose page with what goes into each one.

Ten outfits for December, from Santa and Mrs Claus to a toy soldier and a Christmas tree. Most take about 4 hours and a few take 5, so give yourself a weekend or two. They are grouped by look on the Christmas porch goose page.

Porch goose outfit pattern PDF: letter size and A0

Each goose pattern is a PDF you print yourself: a letter-size file for home printing and an A0 file for a copy shop, with all three sizes in the same pattern. The PDFs and the written step-by-step guide are inside the Sewzy iPhone app, and there is no separate web download at the moment. If you have not printed a pattern before, read how to print PDF sewing patterns at home or at a copy shop.

How a goose outfit goes on

A goose has no shoulders to pull a dress over, so the outfits open at the back. The top has a back slit that closes with two ribbon ties, so you lift it over the head and tie it behind. The neck opening has about 2¼ in of room around the head, and the top is cut at least 2 in wider than the body, so it slips on without a fight.

The fuller dresses, like the witch and the classic outfit, have a skirt made of two gathered tiers. You hem two loops of fabric, stack them, gather them together and sew them to the top. The witch hat is a cone with an interfaced brim and ribbon ties under the beak. Every step is written out in order in the guide, one at a time.

Fabric for a goose that lives outside

Most outfits are cut from 44 in wide cotton, with felt for small parts like wings and trims. Plain quilting cotton is easy to sew, holds a crisp hem and takes the sun better than thin, shiny fabric. If your goose sits in the rain, bring the outfit in during bad weather; a wet outfit on a concrete goose takes a long time to dry.

How much fabric a goose outfit takes

The table lists the main fabric for each outfit, per size, from each pattern's own guide. Trims, felt and interfacing are on each pattern page.

Questions

What size is a standard porch goose?

Most porch geese sold in stores are about 23 inches tall, which is the Standard size. Measure your own goose from the base to the top of the head, because 17 and 27 inch geese are common too.

How much fabric do I need for a porch goose dress?

It depends on the outfit and the size. The Goose Easy Dress takes ½ yd of 44 in cotton for a 17 in goose, ¾ yd for 23 in and ⅞ yd for 27 in. Each pattern page lists the amounts for every size.

Can I make goose clothes without sewing?

A piece of fabric wrapped and tied can work for a quick look. A sewn outfit fits the goose, stays on in the wind and lasts more than one season, which is what these patterns are for.

My goose is 19 or 21 inches. Which size?

Measure the body and head too, then compare with the table. If your goose falls between two sizes, choose the bigger one.

Are any of the goose patterns free?

No. The 21 goose outfits are part of Sewzy Premium, which starts with a 3-day free trial. Thirteen other patterns in the app are free.
