How to tell if your goose is a 17 inch goose

The Small size is chosen by three measurements, and the biggest one decides. Stand the goose on its base, measure straight up to the top of the head, then wrap a soft tape around the widest part of the body and around the head and beak. It is a 17 inch goose, size Small, when all three fit:

Height: base to top of the head is 17 in or less.
Body: around the widest part is 19¾ in or less.
Head: around the head and beak is 8⅝ in or less.

Small is the smallest size, so there is nothing to size down to. If your goose is a little over 17 in, it is not Small. Some geese in stores, for example 19 inch ones, fall between Small and Standard: they are taller than a 17 in goose and shorter than a 23 in goose. Measure the body and head as well, and size up to Standard (23 in). A slightly roomy outfit still looks good on a goose and goes on easily, while a tight one does not.
