Oven Mitt pattern

To sew an oven mitt, quilt a cotton outer with a heat barrier, cut two mitt halves, sew and clip the outer, make a matching lining, nest the lining inside the outer, then sew and turn the cuff. The Oven Mitt is in the Sewzy app in three sizes and takes about three hours. Use 100% cotton throughout with Insul-Bright, never polyester, because polyester melts against a hot pan.

TL;DR

  • An oven mitt is a quilted outer and a quilted lining joined at a turned cuff.
  • Heat safety is the whole point: 100% cotton outer, lining, thread and batting, plus a layer of Insul-Bright for the heat barrier. Polyester anywhere can melt.
  • The Oven Mitt is in the Sewzy app in three sizes, Small, Medium and Large, measuring about 10⅝ to 12⅝ in.
  • It is rated intermediate and takes about 3 hours, mostly because of the quilting and the curved seam.
  • Clip the curves before you turn the mitt so it lies smooth.

What fabric is safe for an oven mitt?

This is the part you cannot improvise. Everything that touches heat must be cotton: a quilting-cotton or canvas outer, a cotton lining, cotton thread, and cotton batting. The heat barrier is Insul-Bright, a batting that is needle-punched with a thin metallized film to reflect heat. Layer it with cotton batting so the metallic layer is not alone against your skin. Do not use polyester fabric, polyester batting or polyester thread anywhere in a mitt, because polyester can melt and stick when it meets a hot dish. Do not swap in other fibers for the outer.

What tools help?

You are sewing through several thick layers, so a little kit makes it easier:

  • A walking foot. It feeds the top and bottom layers at the same speed, so the quilting lines stay straight and the layers do not shift.
  • A sturdy needle. A 90/14 needle handles the thick quilted sandwich without skipping.
  • Cotton thread. Not just for safety. It also presses flat and sits well in quilting.
  • Sewing clips. Pins struggle through the bulk, so clips hold the layers at the cuff and curves.

How is an oven mitt different from a pot holder?

A pot holder is a flat, square pad you grip from above. A mitt is shaped to your hand, so you can slide it on and reach deep into the oven, which protects your wrist as well as your fingers. The layers and the heat rules are the same, so if you have made a pot holder the mitt is the natural next make. The extra work is the curved seam and turning the mitt right side out.

How to sew an oven mitt, step by step

  1. Print and cut the layers. Cut the outer fabric, lining, Insul-Bright and cotton batting from the app pattern piece.
  2. Stack and quilt. Layer outer, batting and Insul-Bright, then quilt straight lines across to hold them together. A walking foot keeps the layers from shifting.
  3. Cut the two outer halves. Cut the mitt shape from the quilted sheet to make the two outer halves.
  4. Make the hanging loop. Fold and stitch a short strip for the loop.
  5. Sew the outer. Right sides together, sew around the mitt, catching the loop. Clip the curves so they turn smoothly, then turn the outer right side out.
  6. Sew the lining. Make the lining the same way, but leave it wrong side out.
  7. Nest and cuff. Slide the outer into the lining, right sides together, and sew around the cuff opening. Turn it all right side out through the gap, then close the gap.

What sizes does the oven mitt come in?

The app has three sizes. Pick by the hand you are sewing for, or make the Large for a roomy, grab-anything mitt.

Small10⅝ in
Medium11⅝ in
Large12⅝ in

Common mistakes

  • Any polyester in the mitt. It is the one unsafe shortcut. Keep every layer and the thread cotton.
  • Skipping the Insul-Bright. Cotton batting alone is padding, not a heat barrier. You need the reflective layer for real oven use.
  • Not quilting the layers. Unquilted layers shift and bunch, and the mitt loses its even thickness.
  • Turning without clipping. The curved seam puckers. Clip the curves close to the stitching first.
  • Too narrow a cuff. Leave the cuff deep enough that your wrist is covered when you reach into the oven.

How do you wash and care for it?

Because every layer is cotton, the mitt is machine washable. Wash it warm, skip the fabric softener (it can coat the fibers and reduce absorbency), and tumble dry low or air dry. Expect a little shrinkage the first wash, which is normal for cotton. Replace a mitt once the batting packs down and heat starts coming through, usually after heavy use, since a thin mitt is no longer protecting your hand.

Is it a good handmade gift?

An oven mitt is a favorite housewarming and holiday gift because it is useful, washable and quick to personalize with a fun print. Sew a matching set with a Potholder (free in the app) and a Bowl Cozy for a kitchen gift bundle. For the cook who hosts, pair it with a Casserole Carrier or a Pot Handle Cover.
