100% cotton quilting fabric or canvas for the outer and lining; Insul-Bright (heat-reflective) plus a layer of cotton batting. No polyester near hot dishes.

You also need

  • 1½ in wide hook-and-loop tape, 16 in
  • 2½ in binding strips, 6½ yd + 2 in bias strips, 1½ yd (about ¾ yd of fabric)
  • Insul-Bright and cotton batting, same yardage as the fabric
  • Walking foot recommended, needle 90/14

The steps

  1. Print and measure
  2. Cut the layers
  3. Stack the layers
  4. Quilt each strip
  5. Trim the ends round
  6. Cut the handle slots
  7. Make the bias binding
  8. Bind the slots
  9. Bind the strip edges
  10. Cross the strips
  11. Sew on the hook-and-loop
  12. Fit it on the dish
