To sew a microwave bowl cozy, quilt two padded stacks of cotton, trim them to the pattern shape, sew darts in each so they curve, then join them around the rim and turn the cozy right side out. Use only 100% cotton fabric, cotton batting and cotton thread, because polyester melts in the microwave. A beginner can make one in about an hour.
TL;DR
- The Sewzy Bowl Cozy is a free beginner pattern that takes about an hour.
- Five sizes fit bowls about 8, 10, 12½, 15 and 17½ inches across.
- Use 100% cotton fabric and 100% cotton batting only. Polyester or metallic thread can scorch or melt in the microwave.
- Each cozy is two quilted stacks, cut twice from fabric and twice from batting, shaped with darts.
- The pattern includes a ⅜ inch (1 cm) seam allowance. Fabric amounts for each size are in the Sewzy app.
What is a bowl cozy?
A bowl cozy is a padded fabric holder that cradles a hot bowl so you can lift it straight out of the microwave without burning your hands. The darts pull the flat quilted square into a bowl shape, and the cotton padding takes the heat for the few seconds it needs to reach the table. They are a popular handmade gift because they are quick, useful and made almost entirely from cotton scraps.
Why cotton only? Microwave safety
This is the one rule that matters: everything that goes in the microwave must be cotton. Polyester batting, polyester thread and metallic fabric can melt, scorch or spark under microwave heat. Use 100% cotton quilting fabric, 100% cotton batting and 100% cotton thread, and check that your fabric has no metallic print. If you are not sure a fabric is all cotton, do not use it for a bowl cozy.
A walking foot helps the layers feed evenly while you quilt, but it is optional.
What you need
- Fabric: 100% cotton, two coordinating prints if you like. Fat-quarter scraps work well.
- Batting: 100% cotton batting, two layers' worth per cozy.
- Thread: 100% cotton thread.
- Optional: a walking foot for smooth quilting.
What size bowl cozy should I make?
Match the size to the bowl you use most. Measure across the top of the bowl and pick the nearest size.
| Size | Fits a bowl about | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 8 in | Small bowls |
| Medium | 10 in | Everyday bowls |
| Large | 12½ in | Large bowls |
| XL | 15 in | Big bowls |
| Jumbo | 17½ in | Extra-large bowls |
How to sew a bowl cozy, step by step
- Print and cut. Print the PDF and cut the pattern for your bowl size.
- Mark the quilt lines. Draw your quilting lines on the fabric so they stay even.
- Make the two stacks. Layer cotton fabric over cotton batting, two stacks in all.
- Quilt the stacks. Sew along your marked lines through both layers of each stack.
- Trim the stacks to shape. Cut each quilted stack to the pattern outline.
- Sew the top and bottom darts. The darts are what turn a flat square into a bowl shape.
- Sew the left and right darts. Sew the other two darts the same way.
- Put the two stacks together. Place them right sides facing.
- Sew the rim. Stitch around the top edge, leaving a gap to turn through.
- Snip the corners and turn. Clip the corners, then pull the cozy right side out through the gap.
- Topstitch the rim. Topstitch all the way around the rim.
- Check the fit. Sit your bowl inside to confirm it nests well.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using any polyester. This is the single most important rule: polyester fabric, batting or thread can melt in the microwave. Keep every layer 100% cotton.
- Skipping the darts. Without all four darts the cozy stays flat and will not hold a bowl. Sew every one.
- Quilting too loosely. Widely spaced lines let the padding shift and bunch. Follow the marked quilt lines closely.
- Microwaving too long. A cozy protects your hands from a short reheat, not a long cook, and the bowl still gets hot, so handle with care.
