A standard porch goose is about 23 inches tall, measured from the base to the top of the head. Porch geese are usually made in three sizes, 17, 23 and 27 inches, and Sewzy goose outfit patterns come in the matching Small, Standard and Large sizes. If your goose falls between two sizes, measure the body and go up a size.
TL;DR
- Standard porch goose: about 23 inches tall.
- Other common sizes: 17 inches (small) and 27 inches (large).
- Sewzy goose patterns are sized Small (17 inch goose), Standard (23 inch goose) and Large (27 inch goose).
- Height only tells you the size family. The body around and the head around decide how clothes fit.
- In between two sizes? Choose the larger one. A back slit with a ribbon bow keeps a roomy outfit tidy.
What are the common porch goose sizes?
Most porch geese are sold in a small number of heights. The table shows the three sizes you will see most often and the Sewzy pattern size that matches each one.
| Goose height | Sewzy pattern size | Where it usually lives |
|---|---|---|
| 17 inches | Small | Steps, a small porch, a shelf or a table |
| 23 inches | Standard | The classic front-door goose |
| 27 inches | Large | A wide porch, a lawn or a garden bed |
Labels can be rounded, so a goose sold as 23 inches may measure a little more or a little less. Use your own tape measure for the final answer.
How tall is a standard porch goose?
About 23 inches. When people search for the average or standard porch goose size, this is the height they usually mean. It is the size most people picture when they say standard porch goose.
Measure from the very bottom of the base straight up to the top of the head. Keep the tape vertical instead of following the curve of the neck. If your goose stands on a separate base, write down whether you measured with or without it.
What size clothes fit a porch goose?
Goose clothes are sized by the goose, not by a person. A Small outfit is cut for a 17 inch goose, a Standard outfit for a 23 inch goose and a Large outfit for a 27 inch goose. The clothes slip over the head and close at the back with a ribbon bow, so they do not need to be exact, but a very tight outfit is hard to fix.
Porch goose clothing size is easiest to settle with three numbers:
- Height: base to top of head. This points you to Small, Standard or Large.
- Body around: the widest part of the belly, with the tape level and snug.
- Head around: the widest part of the head, so the neck opening passes over it.
For the full walk-through, read how to measure a porch goose. This page answers a different question: which size do you probably have, and which one should you pick.
What size clothes does a 19 inch porch goose wear?
A 19 inch goose is 2 inches taller than the Small size and 4 inches shorter than the Standard size. Height alone cannot settle it, so look at the body measurement.
- If the body around is close to a 17 inch goose, use Small.
- If the body is rounder, or you are not sure, use Standard. The back slit and bow let you close a roomy outfit neatly, and a skirt hem is easy to shorten.
- If the outfit looks loose, tuck a thin layer of batting inside before you tie the bow.
The same thinking works for any in-between goose, such as a 20 or 25 inch one. Let the body measurement lead, then go up a size when it is a close call.
What if my goose is between two sizes?
Go up. A slightly big outfit can be hemmed, padded or tied more firmly. A slightly small one gapes at the back, and the only fix is to sew it again. Hems are the easiest adjustment on a goose outfit, so a longer skirt is a safe mistake.
What size porch goose should I get?
If you are buying a goose and plan to dress it, think about where it will stand first.
- 17 inches: best for steps, small stoops and shelves. Outfits use the least fabric.
- 23 inches: the standard choice for a front door.
- 27 inches: best when the goose has to be seen from far away. Outfits use the most fabric.
All three sizes have matching patterns, so the size you choose will not limit the outfits you can sew. For a rough idea of fabric amounts, see how much fabric a porch goose dress needs.
Common mistakes when choosing a goose size
- Trusting the label. Measure the goose you own.
- Measuring along the neck. Keep the tape straight up and down for height.
- Skipping the body. Two geese with the same height can have different bellies.
- Going down a size to save fabric. A tight outfit is the most common reason a goose outfit does not work.
- Measuring over thick clothes. Measure the bare goose, then sew the outfit.
