Porch Goose Pajamas Outfit pattern

Both outfits are in the Sewzy app. The Porch Goose Pajamas Outfit and the Porch Goose Ugly Sweater Outfit each come in Small, Standard and Large for 17, 23 and 27 inch geese. Each takes about 4 hours and is rated intermediate, and both are Premium patterns, not free downloads.

TL;DR

  • Porch Goose Pajamas Outfit: a top with a round collar, puffy sleeves, a gathered skirt and a cap with a pom-pom.
  • Porch Goose Ugly Sweater Outfit: a top with a felt tree on the front, red stripes on the sleeves, a gathered skirt and a cap with a band.
  • Sizes: Small (17 inch goose), Standard (23 inch goose) and Large (27 inch goose).
  • About 4 hours each, intermediate level. Fabric amounts for every size are listed in the app.
  • Both close at the back with a slit and neck ties, so a slightly roomy outfit still looks neat.

Is there a porch goose pajamas pattern?

Yes. The Porch Goose Pajamas Outfit is built like a dress-up set: a top, a gathered skirt and a matching cap. The top has a round collar that you finish flat and crisp, a bound neck with ties, and two puffy sleeves. The cap is made with an outer crown and a lining crown, and it finishes with a pom-pom.

The steps run in this order: cut out, shoulders, back slit, round collar, neck tape, make the sleeves, sew the sleeves on, sides, skirt loop, skirt on, cap crown, close the cap and add the pom-pom.

Is there a porch goose sweater pattern?

Yes. The Porch Goose Ugly Sweater Outfit uses the same top, sleeve and skirt build, with ugly-sweater details on top. You sew a green felt tree on the front before joining the shoulders, then add red stripes to both sleeves. The cap finishes with a band instead of a pom-pom. On the site's Christmas page it pairs a cream top with a red skirt, and you can change the colors to suit your porch.

The steps run in this order: cut out, felt tree, shoulders, back slit, neck tape, sleeve stripes, make the sleeves, sleeves on, sides, skirt loop, skirt on, cap crown, close the cap and cap band.

Which size should I make?

Pattern sizeGoose height
Small17 inches
Standard23 inches
Large27 inches

A standard porch goose is about 23 inches tall. If your goose is between two sizes, measure the body and go up a size. Two guides cover this in detail: how tall is a porch goose and how to measure a porch goose.

What do I need to sew a goose outfit?

  • Fabric: amounts for each size are listed in the app. Cotton is easy to sew and holds a gathered skirt well. Flannel or a soft print suits the pajamas, and felt suits the sweater tree.
  • Notions: thread and the other small items listed in the app.
  • Tools: a sewing machine, scissors, pins, an iron and a safety pin or bodkin for ties.
  • Pattern: the printable PDF. If you have not printed a pattern before, read how to print PDF sewing patterns.

How do the pajamas and sweater go together?

Both outfits share the same order of work, which makes the second one much faster than the first.

  1. Cut out. Cut every piece before you sew, so you know nothing is missing.
  2. Shoulders and back slit. Join the top at the shoulders, then open the slit at the back and finish it neatly. The goose goes in through this opening.
  3. Neck. Bind the neck and attach the ties. The pajamas also get a round collar before the neck is bound. The sweater has its felt tree sewn on the front before the shoulders are joined, and its red sleeve stripes go on before the sleeves are made.
  4. Sleeves. Make two puffy sleeves, then sew them on.
  5. Sides. Close the sides to finish the top.
  6. Skirt. Hem the skirt, gather it into a loop and sew it on. The dress is now done.
  7. Cap. Make an outer crown and a lining crown, close the cap, then add a pom-pom (pajamas) or a band (sweater).

How do I choose fabric and colors?

Pick fabrics that press well and gather easily, because the skirt is gathered into a loop and the sleeves are puffy. For the pajamas, a soft cotton print or flannel gives the cozy look. For the sweater, a plain cotton top lets the felt tree and the sleeve stripes stand out. Felt does not fray, so the tree needs no hemming. Wash and press washable fabric before you cut, and keep the finished outfit dry on the porch.

Because these are outfits for a goose and not for a person, scraps and remnants work well. A goose in size Small needs far less fabric than a Large one, so check the amounts for your size in the app before you shop.

Common mistakes with goose outfits

  • Guessing the size. Measure the goose first. Heights are rounded and molds differ.
  • Going down a size. A tight outfit gapes at the back. A roomy one can be hemmed or padded.
  • Sewing the tree on after the shoulders. On the sweater, the felt tree goes on the front before the shoulders are joined, which is much easier to handle.
  • Skipping the lining crown on the cap. The lining gives the cap a clean inside and keeps it flat.
  • Leaving the outfit out in the rain. Bring fabric outfits in during wet weather.

Where do these fit with the other Christmas outfits?

The porch goose Christmas outfits to sew guide covers Santa, Mrs Claus, elf, reindeer and more, so this page only looks at the pajamas and the sweater.
