The best gifts for sewists are things they reach for every time they sew. Think of a needle book, an ironing board cover, a zipper pouch for notions, sharp fabric shears, a rotary cutter and mat, or a fabric bundle. If you sew too, you can make the first three in an hour or less each. The Zipper Pouch is a free pattern. The Needle Book and Ironing Board Cover are Premium patterns, and both are rated beginner.
TL;DR
- To sew: a Needle Book (45 min), an Ironing Board Cover (1 hour) and a Zipper Pouch (45 min). All three are beginner patterns.
- For a sewist who cooks: a Pot Handle Cover, intermediate, about 2 hours.
- To buy: fabric shears, thread snips, a rotary cutter, a cutting mat, a long ruler, clips, needles or a fabric bundle.
- Not sure what they own? Consumables like needles, thread and fabric always get used.

Needle Book: 45 minutes
A needle book is a small fabric folder with felt pages that hold hand-sewing needles and pins. This one has a cover, felt pages, an inside pocket and a tab that closes with a ¾ inch button, an elastic loop or a magnet. It comes in Small (3 x 4 in), Medium (4 x 5 in) and Large (5 x 6 in) when closed.
Use quilting cotton for the outer and the lining, with fusible fleece inside. One fat eighth of each fabric makes 3 Small, 2 Medium or 1 Large. The pages are wool or wool-blend felt, and pinking shears give them a neat edge. Since a fat eighth makes several Small ones, you can sew a batch for a whole sewing group.
Ironing Board Cover: 1 hour
Every sewist presses more than they expect, and board covers wear out. This pattern has you draw the cover from your board, using one nose template cut on the fold. The edge becomes a casing for a ¼ inch cotton cord or bias tape with a cord stop. There is no seam allowance to add.
| Size | Board | Fabric (58 in wide cotton) |
|---|---|---|
| Tabletop | 12 x 32 in | 1¼ yd |
| Standard | 13 x 48 in | 1¾ yd |
| Full | 15 x 54 in | 2 yd |
Use 100% cotton canvas, duck or drill, and prewash it, because cotton shrinks. You can add an optional pad of 100% cotton or wool batting or felt. For a surprise, measure their board while they are out of the room.
Zipper Pouch: 45 minutes
A pouch keeps clips, a seam ripper, a tape measure and bobbins in one place. Small is 7 x 5 inches with a 7 inch zipper, Medium is 9 x 6½ inches with a 9 inch zipper and Large is 11 x 8 inches with a 12 inch zipper. Small and Medium take ¼ yard of outer fabric and ¼ yard of lining, and Large takes ⅓ yard of each. A laminated cotton lining wipes clean, which helps with loose threads. Read how to sew a zipper pouch before you start.
Pot Handle Cover: 2 hours
This one is for the sewist who also cooks. It slips over a hot skillet or Dutch oven handle. Use 100% cotton or felted wool for the outer, a cotton lining, and Insul-Bright plus cotton batting or two layers of cotton batting. The pattern's safety note says to use 100% cotton only and never to leave the cover on a handle inside the oven.
What tools make good gifts for sewists?
These are general suggestions, not product picks. Check what they already own, and ask about left-handed tools.
| Gift | Why sewists like it | Check before you buy |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric shears | Clean cuts through layers | Fits their hand; can be sharpened |
| Thread snips | Quick trims at the machine | A sharp, fine point |
| Rotary cutter | Straight, fast cuts for quilting | Spare blades in the same size |
| Self-healing cutting mat | Protects the table and the blade | As large as their table allows |
| Clear acrylic ruler | Measures and guides the rotary cutter | Clear markings in their units |
| Fabric bundle | New fabric is always welcome | Their style: quilting or clothing |
| Sewing clips | Hold thick layers without pins | A good number in one box |
| Machine needles | Needles dull and should be changed often | The type their machine takes |
| Pressing ham | Shapes curved seams when pressing | A firm, well-filled ham |
| Pattern weights | Hold patterns flat while cutting | Heavy and flat on the bottom |

How do you pick a gift for a sewist who has everything?
- Look for worn-out tools. A scorched ironing board cover, a bent seam ripper or a blunt pair of shears is an easy hint.
- Choose consumables. Needles, thread in neutral colors, spare rotary blades and fabric all get used up.
- Match the kind of sewing. Quilters use rulers and mats more. Garment sewists use a pressing ham, marking tools and a tape measure more.
- Ask about the machine. Feet and needles must fit their machine, so check the brand and model first.
- Give time. A local class, or an afternoon of sewing together, is a gift most sewists enjoy.
What gift sets can you put together?
| Set | Sew | Add |
|---|---|---|
| Starter kit | Zipper Pouch | Snips, seam ripper, clips, tape measure |
| Hand-sewing kit | Needle Book | Hand needles, pins, a thimble, thread |
| Sewing room refresh | Ironing Board Cover and Needle Book | Pressing ham, a fabric bundle |
| Kitchen sewist | Pot Handle Cover | Fat quarters in kitchen prints |
Wrap the set in a drawstring bag, a free pattern, and the wrapping becomes a project bag. More ideas are in handmade Christmas gifts to sew and stocking stuffers to sew.
When should you start?
Christmas is Friday, December 25, 2026. The three beginner gifts each take an hour or less, so you can sew them in one or two weekends. Leave the Pot Handle Cover for a free afternoon, since it has 12 steps and thick layers. Buy tools early, because the right size or style may be out of stock in December.

FAQ
What do you get someone who loves to sew?
Pick things they use every time they sew: good fabric shears, small thread snips, a rotary cutter and mat, sewing clips, fresh machine needles or a fabric bundle. A handmade needle book or ironing board cover also gets daily use.
What can I sew for a friend who sews?
A needle book, an ironing board cover and a zipper pouch for notions are all beginner patterns that take about 45 minutes to an hour. A pot handle cover is an intermediate project of about 2 hours for a sewist who cooks.
Which of these gift patterns are free?
The Zipper Pouch is free. The Needle Book, Ironing Board Cover and Pot Handle Cover are Premium patterns.
What size ironing board cover should I sew?
Measure their board. The Ironing Board Cover comes in Tabletop for a 12 x 32 in board, Standard for 13 x 48 in and Full for 15 x 54 in. It takes 1¼, 1¾ or 2 yards of 58 inch cotton canvas, duck or drill.
Are fabric bundles a good gift for sewists?
Yes, if you match their style. Quilters often like coordinated fat quarters, and garment sewists may prefer one larger cut of a fabric they would wear. A gift card to a fabric shop is a safe choice if you are not sure.
What scissors should I buy a sewist?
A pair of sharp fabric shears that will only ever cut fabric, plus small snips for thread. Ask whether they are left-handed, and choose a pair that can be sharpened.
